FDFP Consulting’s Principal has over four decades of experience in Fire Protection Engineering. For much of the last twenty years, his work has focused on the fire protection and life safety needs of the Hospitality Industry.

Byron Briese began work in the field of fire protection as a firefighter in the Prince George’s County MD fire service. While serving as a firefighter, he earned a Bachelor of Science in Fire Protection Engineering from the University of Maryland in 1979. In 1980, he left the fire service and was employed by several consulting engineering and risk management firms.

Since 1999, his work has centered on existing lodging properties specifically fire & life safety system replacements and upgrades to hotels and related facilities. Clients have included major hotel operators, large Real Estate Investment Trusts and individual property owners.

As part of this work, he has gained valuable insight and experience in the application of Lodging Industry brand requirements. He collaborated in the development of Fire Protection & Life Safety standards for two lodging firms.

Professional memberships include the Society of Fire Protection Engineers (SFPE), International Code Council (ICC), and the National Fire Protection Association (NFPA). As a member of NFPA he has previously served on a number of technical committees and been a contributor to the organization’s Fire Protection Handbook. He has prepared and offered numerous seminars regarding fire protection and life safety for the Lodging Industry.

Byron is a registered as a professional engineer in Delaware and South Carolina. He earned an MBA from Marymount University (Arlington, VA) in 1991.

During natural disasters in his home state, Mr. Briese serves with the South Carolina State Guard’s Engineering Group. He is vice-chair, Town of Edisto Beach Construction Board of Appeals.
